The brief

The European Defence Agency (EDA) is one of the youngest European Union Agencies based in Brussels, Belgium and offers support to the Council and the Member States in an effort to improve the European Union’s defence capabilities for the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).

Having previously migrated content from an existing Sitefinity 3.7 website, Spinbox were asked to re-evaluate the current front end website and recommend/implement new changes focusing on the presentation of EDA news and related content.

The solution

With a long established working relationship with Spinbox, when the European Defence Agency wanted to update their website we were the automatic first choice. The objectives for the new site were clear from the start. Not only did the EDA want to upgrade to the latest version of Sitefinity to take advantage of its improved features, they also wanted a design which was modern, uncluttered and capitalised on the strong imagery at the EDA’s disposal.

Spinbox’s starting point for this project was to perform an in depth analysis of the EDA’s existing site, using Google Analytics to identify top performing content and elevate this in the new design. Spinbox then worked collaboratively with the EDA to refine design concepts - the result of this was an improved navigation structure which made it easy for users to find content and a modern, up-to-date design which presented the EDA’s work in a clear and engaging manner. Key sections such as the Procurement gateway were separated from the main navigation, allowing industry and government audiences to easily access the content they needed whilst not cluttering the user interface.

With EDA’s wide remit it was decided that focussing on news content was the best way to communicate the range of activities which the EDA were involved in and showcase the ever active nature of their work. This was delivered through an info hub which presented latest news as well as events, publications and multimedia. Taxonomy was used to display relevant content to users as they navigated through the site and maximise engagement.

To ensure a rich and engaging user experience the most up-to-date front end development techniques such as HTML5 and CSS3 were employed to deliver content to users. Spinbox also designed the site to be fully responsive across mobile devices ensuring a great user experience regardless of device.

Due to the sensitive nature of the EDA’s work delivery of a secure website was of paramount importance. Fortunately Sitefinity’s out-of-the-box functionality made it easy to deliver this, allowing Spinbox to implement two Sitefinity separated by a firewall with information synchronised between the two, keeping their network safe and delivering a fast, content rich website for their audience.

The results

When it comes to results and success, EDA website has shone above the rest. With multiple phases of design and development, the EDA website is now the leading European Government website.

Spinbox have re-designed the full digital strategy from mobile, desktop and legacy support. Content and call to actions has provided clear direction for users and stakeholders.

Some amazing bespoke modules has allowed for user interaction with the website never achieved before within Sitefinity. With the 3rd round of visual improvements complete, the mobile traffic is on the up and clear navigation of the website has provided a huge reduction in bounce rates.

The project involved various overseas visits working closely with the EDA IT department to assist with the new development and also offering on-site training to bring the editors up to speed on a newer, slicker version of the Sitefinity UI and back end system.
