Working with our partner, Clarity, Ahold Delhaize have a clear objective to train their staff with interactive content, enhancing the learning experience, specifically for Cyber Security. From UX, development and bound together with Umbraco, Spinbox created a unique and powerful solution.

The Brief

Training that works

Ahold Delhaize wanted to create a brand new experience for their staff that would combine learning with team building. The experience would see users land in the world of Zoe and Bert whose mission is to crack down on cyber threats to save the business and it's reputation.

The game would need to be gated so that only Ahold Delhaize staff and their Brand Associates could access it. Multiple players would need to play at any one time, with one person acting as the 'team leader'.

The vision consisted of a series of puzzles that players would need solve in order to move on to the next, with Clarity creating the concept, designs and assets for us to use during the build. The puzzles would be tackled sequentially with the overall experience timed for added pressure!

Gamify Training

In 2017, Ahold Delhaize initiated their Living Data program to bolster employee awareness of cyber security through engaging, computer-based training events. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, a challenge arose: how to continue delivering effective training safely to a global workforce?  

The solution? A series of engaging and educational video games.  

Spinbox was tasked with creating three escape room-style video games to educate employees about cyber security. These games, Cyber Defense Squad, The Walking Threat, and Malice in Cyberland, allowed users to compete individually or in teams, testing and enhancing their knowledge on topics from password management to phishing detection.  

As the games gained popularity, Ahold Delhaize sought a centralised platform to host all training materials, leaderboards, and game access. Thus, the Living Data Arcade was born.

It works!

The Living Data Arcade significantly boosted Ahold Delhaize’s employee engagement in cyber security training by 20%. Its synchronised launch with Malice in Cyberland saw unprecedented participation, with more employees playing the game in its first week than ever before. The integration of Azure Active Directory and a user-friendly CMS has empowered Ahold Delhaize to efficiently manage training content and user access, driving down costs and increasing operational productivity.
